Microsoft's cloud identity platform, providing user and device identity, single sign-on, and token issuance via OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect for Microsoft 365, Azure and third-party applications. Despite the historical name it is not a cloud copy of Active Directory — it has no Kerberos/NTLM or LDAP surface of its own and uses a flat object model with modern protocols. Devices can be Entra-joined or hybrid-joined, and access is governed through mechanisms such as Conditional Access.
