Autopilot fails on Windows Home edition

Last reviewed 2026-08-05 by the Just Software engineering team · also seen as 80180022, hresult = 0x80180022, autopilot windows home

What it means

Autopilot device enrolment fails with HRESULT = 0x80180022. The device being provisioned is running Windows Home edition, which has no MDM enrolment capability and cannot join Microsoft Entra ID. Nothing in Intune or the Autopilot profile will change this — it is an edition limit.

Common causes

  1. The device shipped with, or was imaged with, Windows Home edition.

How to fix it

  1. Upgrade the device to Windows Pro edition or higher, then retry Autopilot. A subscription-activation or MAK/KMS upgrade path both work; the edition must change before OOBE reaches the enrolment step.

  2. Where devices are bought in volume, specify Pro at the point of purchase — retail consumer stock routinely ships with Home.
